Burns Night in Edinburgh: Proper Haggis and The Scotsman Hotel

Burns Night in Edinburgh on January 25 is as serious as it gets. Here is where to celebrate it.

Burns Night on January 25th in Edinburgh carries a weight it does not have in most other cities. This is Scotland’s capital – the home of the National Library where Burns’s manuscripts are held, the city where his legacy has been institutionally recognised since the century after his death. The January 25th events here range from the properly formal Burns Supper circuit to the pub celebrations that fill Cowgate and Grassmarket with people who know all three verses of Auld Lang Syne rather than just the first one.

01 Scotsman

The Scotsman Hotel Burns Supper

The Scotsman Hotel in the former newspaper building on North Bridge runs an annual Burns Supper that is one of the city’s most produced formal events. The setting – the former newspaper’s grand editorial floors, now a hotel dining space – gives it a grandeur appropriate to the occasion. The Address to the Haggis, the Immortal Memory speech, and the full supper menu in this building on January 25th is Edinburgh Burns Night at its most ceremonial. Tickets go on sale in November and the event fills quickly.

02 Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Burns Supper Club

The annually organised Edinburgh Burns Supper Club runs various events across the city in January and brings together a mix of formal suppers, spoken word readings, and live ceilidh music. The events at different venues across the city cover different price points and formats – from the full traditional supper to the more informal pub supper versions. Check listings from early January.

03 Ceilidh

Ceilidh Dancing

Burns Night in Edinburgh is inseparable from ceilidh dancing, and the organised ceilidh events on January 25th at venues including the Assembly Rooms on George Street are among the year’s best. No prior knowledge is required – the caller guides the dances – and the atmosphere of a full ceilidh on Burns Night in Edinburgh is genuinely specific to Scotland. Book ceilidh events in advance from early January.

04 Haggis

The Haggis

Macsween of Edinburgh are the gold standard haggis producers in Scotland and their products are available from their factory shop in Bilston Glen and from Waitrose and specialist delis across the city in January. The Address to a Haggis is a Burns poem that rewards being read aloud – the theatrical stabbing of the haggis at the line “An cut you up wi’ ready slight” is one of Scottish culture’s most enjoyable performance traditions.

05 Whisky

Whisky Pairings

The Scotch Whisky Experience on Castlehill runs Burns Night tasting events pairing specific whiskies with the traditional Burns Supper menu courses. These are ticketed and run across the last week of January. An alternative: take the supper you have cooked at home and pair it with whatever single malt you have decided represents Burns Night this year. Both approaches are valid.
