Best Cheap Eats Edinburgh

Edinburgh can be expensive but it does not have to be. The best cheap eats in the city, from Mosque Kitchen to the Leith Walk strip.

Edinburgh has a reputation for being pricey and on the Royal Mile that reputation is entirely deserved. Step off the tourist circuit, though, and you find a city where the locals eat extremely well for not very much money at all.

01 Mosque

Mosque Kitchen, Potterrow

This is non-negotiable. Mosque Kitchen on Potterrow serves some of the best value food in any British city – massive portions of curry, rice, naan and salad for around £5. It is halal, mostly outdoor eating under a marquee, completely unpretentious and absolutely packed at lunchtime with students, university staff and anyone in the know. The lamb curry is the move. Cash preferred, no fuss, incredible value.

02 Nicholson

Nicholson Street and South Bridge

The stretch running south from the Old Town is student territory and priced accordingly. You will find Halalicious for solid Pakistani food, various pizza-by-the-slice operations, and Kalpna – a long-running vegetarian Indian restaurant that does a lunchtime buffet at a price that makes the quality seem almost unfair.

03 Leith

Leith Walk

Leith Walk is Edinburgh’s most underrated eating street. The Polish delis – Polskie Smaki among them – sell hot food and pastries for almost nothing. There are Vietnamese and Chinese spots that the food press has largely ignored. Pham Sushi does fresh rolls at prices that have not caught up with the quality.

04 Greggs

Greggs

Look, we all know. Edinburgh has Greggs. Moving on.

05 Hanedan

Hanedan, Leith Walk

Turkish restaurant that does a lunch deal – wrap, drink, chips – for well under a tenner. The portion sizes are honest and the flatbread is made properly. It gets busy at lunch because word travels fast when something is both cheap and good.

06 Forest

The Forest Cafe, Lauriston Place

Vegan and vegetarian cafe run on a community model, with sliding scale pricing. One of those Edinburgh institutions that feels like it should not exist in 2026 and yet here it is, serving proper food to students and skint creatives who keep it going through sheer loyalty.

Edinburgh cheap eating is a skill. The rule is simple – walk away from the Royal Mile and prices drop by a third. Head towards the university and they drop by half.
