Best Barbershops in Edinburgh

Edinburgh's barbershop scene has grown up properly. Here's where to get a decent cut across the city.

The barbershop revival happened in Edinburgh as everywhere else, and the city now has a good range of shops – from old-school traditional barbers that have been cutting in the same spot for forty years to newer places with a more contemporary aesthetic and booking apps. Here’s where to go.

01 Rab8217s

Rab’s Barbershop

Rab’s in Stockbridge is one of Edinburgh’s most-talked-about independent barbershops – old-school in atmosphere, proper hot towel shaves available, and the kind of place where the chat is as much a part of the service as the haircut. Walk-ins sometimes taken, appointments preferred. Stockbridge’s mixed neighbourhood makes for an eclectic clientele and the barbers know what they’re doing with diverse hair types.

02 Ruffians

Ruffians

Ruffians started in Edinburgh (George Street) before expanding to Glasgow and London – a premium grooming brand that pitches at a higher price point but backs it up with proper skill and a decent range of products. The George Street location has a classic-with-modern aesthetic: black tiles, chrome, leather. Hot towel shaves, cuts and full grooming services. You’ll pay more than a standard barber but the standard is consistently high. Good for a treat or a proper pre-event cut.

03 Captain039s

Captain's Barber

A South Side favourite near the Meadows – Captain’s Barber has a loyal student and local following. Solid fades and modern cuts at fair prices. Walk-in culture rather than appointment-heavy, which suits the busy nearby university campus crowd. No-nonsense shop with decent music and staff who don’t make conversation an ordeal.

04 Leith

The Leith Barbershop Scene

Leith has several independent barbers serving the area’s varied residential population. The Shore and Leith Walk have a handful of shops that have been there long enough to know the area well. Worth walking the Walk (literally – Leith Walk has a decent density of barbers) and picking based on queue length and displayed work. McGinty's and similar traditional shops in the Leith area have been cutting since before the artisan revival made it fashionable.

05 Tips

Tips

Edinburgh’s better barbers book up quickly, especially Thursday-Saturday. If you want a specific barber rather than whoever’s free, book ahead. Most of the newer Edinburgh shops use Treatwell or their own booking systems online. Walk-in culture still exists at many traditional shops but Friday afternoon is never the time to test it.
