Edinburgh in Spring: Botanics, Blossoms and the City Waking Up

Edinburgh in spring is one of the best versions of the city. Here is how to enjoy it.

Edinburgh in spring is a city emerging from one of the darker, windier winters in Europe. When it turns – usually late March into April – it turns fast. The Royal Botanic Garden comes into full bloom, Holyrood Park takes on its proper green, and Arthur’s Seat becomes crowded with people who have been waiting three months to climb it again. The city at this time of year, before the summer festival crowds arrive, is the version that residents know and visitors rarely see.

01 Royal

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The Botanics in April and May is the Edinburgh spring experience. The cherry blossom avenue near the east gate usually peaks in late April and the combination of flowering trees, the glasshouse collections, and the skyline view of the castle from the upper garden makes it one of the most complete free green space experiences in Scotland. Free to enter the grounds; the glasshouses are ticketed. The cafe at the John Hope Gateway is a reliable lunch stop. Go on a weekday if you want the blossoms without the weekend crowds.

02 Holyrood

Holyrood Park

The royal park at the foot of Arthur’s Seat is properly dramatic in spring – the combination of the volcanic rock, the early season heather starting to show green, and the views back across the city from the summit make the 45-minute walk to the top worth the effort. The Radical Road path along the south cliff face is the scenic alternative to the main tourist route to the summit. Start from St Margaret’s Loch for the quieter approach.

03 Dean

Dean Village and Water of Leith

The Water of Leith walkway from Dean Village to Stockbridge is one of the city’s best spring walks – a route that feels disconnected from the urban centre despite being ten minutes from Princes Street. The cherry trees along the river in Stockbridge and the daffodil planting along the walkway make it genuinely worth doing in April. The Stockbridge Market on Sundays provides the natural end point.

04 Stockbridge

Stockbridge Market

The Sunday market in Stockbridge runs year-round but comes properly into its own in spring when the outdoor stalls are not competing with horizontal Edinburgh January rain. The food offer – Arbroath smokie, artisan cheese, Edinburgh-made pastries – is the best of the city’s market provision. Combine with the Water of Leith walk for a proper spring Sunday morning in Edinburgh.
