Edinburgh to Inverness by Train

The Edinburgh to Inverness train is one of Scotland's best journeys - three hours through Highland Pass country to the Cairngorm gateway.

The Edinburgh Waverley to Inverness route by ScotRail is, at around three hours, one of the most scenic rail journeys in Britain that doesn’t involve a steam engine or a heritage railway. This is proper Highland Main Line – passing through Perthshire and the southern Cairngorms before dropping into the Highland capital.

01 Route

The Route

Trains depart Edinburgh Waverley and head north through Perth (about an hour), then continue up the Highland Main Line through Pitlochry, Blair Atholl, over the Drumochter Pass (the highest point on the UK main railway network at 452 metres), down through Dalwhinnie (home to one of Scotland’s most recognisable distilleries), on through Newtonmore, Kingussie and Aviemore before the final run north to Inverness.

Total journey time is approximately 3 hours 10 minutes on the faster services. There are around 5-6 direct services per day; some involve a change at Perth. Check the ScotRail timetable carefully – some services also stop at Carrbridge and Culloden Moor.

The Views

Frankly spectacular, particularly the section from Pitlochry northwards. The Pass of Killiecrankie is just north of Pitlochry and the railway cuts through it dramatically. Blair Atholl’s castle sits just visible from the train. The Drumochter Pass crossing is open, bleakly beautiful moorland at altitude – in winter this section can be snow-covered and wild. The Cairngorm massif sits to the east from Aviemore onwards. Sit on the right side of the train heading north for the best Cairngorm views.

03 Aviemore

Aviemore as a Stop

Aviemore is a perfectly valid destination in itself. It’s the main gateway to the Cairngorm National Park – Loch Morlich is a short bus or bike ride from the station, the funicular railway up Cairn Gorm (weather and technical issues permitting) is 15 minutes by bus, and there’s excellent mountain biking, hiking and winter skiing. Many people use the Edinburgh-Aviemore leg as a day trip. Journey time Edinburgh to Aviemore is around 2 hours 20 minutes.

04 Inverness

Inverness Itself

Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and a pleasant city of around 47,000 – compact, friendly and increasingly well-served by restaurants and accommodation. From Inverness you can reach Loch Ness (25 minutes by bus or car), Culloden Battlefield (20 minutes by bus – the 5A runs from town), and Cawdor Castle. Further north, the Far North Line runs from Inverness to Thurso and Wick, and the Kyle of Lochalsh line heads west to Skye. Inverness is where the Highlands really begin.
